Study Cloud Latin America, Session III. March 18th, 2026.
The Study Cloud session focused on the critical role of the dentist in the management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), emphasizing dentistry’s growing contribution within a multidisciplinary healthcare approach. The session outlined how dentists are often in a unique position to identify early signs of OSA during routine examinations, such as craniofacial characteristics, airway limitations, tooth wear, and patient-reported symptoms like snoring or daytime fatigue.
It highlighted the importance of proper screening protocols and timely referral to sleep physicians for definitive diagnosis, typically through polysomnography. The session also explored the dentist’s role in the treatment phase, particularly in the fabrication and management of oral appliance therapy (OAT), which is an effective alternative for patients with mild to moderate OSA or those intolerant to CPAP therapy.
Additionally, the session stressed the need for adequate training in Dental Sleep Medicine, patient follow-up, and collaboration with medical professionals to ensure comprehensive care. Overall, it reinforced the dentist’s responsibility not only in treatment but also in prevention, education, and long-term management of patients with OSA.
