Educational Need / Rationale
Sleep-disordered breathing, particularly snoring and OSA, is underrecognized and undertreated in Indonesia, despite its major impact on systemic health and quality of life.
Dentists are well positioned to identify oral and craniofacial risk factors and support collaborative management with sleep physicians and other medical professionals, yet many lack formal training and familiarity with current guidelines.
Course Overview
The Dental Sleep Symposium 2026 at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Pelita Harapan is designed for Indonesian dentists who want to better understand their role in recognizing and comanaging sleep and airway disorders, including snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This focused halfday program introduces the fundamentals of dental sleep medicine—from identifying atrisk patients chairside to integrating screening, referral pathways, and multidisciplinary management—using evidencebased, guidelinedriven approaches that align with the defined scope of dental practice.
Overall Goal
To provide dentists with foundational knowledge and practical frameworks to recognize sleep and airway disorders.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants will be able to
Recognize the dentist’s role in sleep and airway health
Identify the scope of dental sleep medicine and describe how Indonesian dentists can contribute to the screening, recognition, and comanagement of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Understand diagnostic and medical pathways
Explain the basic principles of medical diagnosis for sleep and airway disorders (including sleep studies and physician assessment) and outline clear, guidelineconsistent referral pathways to sleep physicians and other medical specialists.
Implement collaborative, multidisciplinary care models
Develop a framework for effective communication and collaboration between dentists, sleep physicians, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated, patient centered management of sleep and airway disorders.
Review current clinical guidelines for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea
Summarize key internationally relevant clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, with emphasis on the defined role, responsibilities, and limitations of dentists within these pathways.
