Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain, Session IV, Latin America. May 13, 2026.

Session IV of Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain was dedicated to the study of the International Classification of Orofacial Pain (ICOP), the first standardized, evidence-based classification for the diagnosis of orofacial pain. During the session, participants reviewed the general structure of ICOP and its relationship to the ICHD-3 headache classification, strengthening clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis for various types of orofacial pain. Additionally, the main clinical categories were analyzed, including dentoalveolar pain, orofacial neuropathic pain, and pain conditions that may resemble headaches
In the second part of the session, topics related to neurovascular pain, primary intraoral pain, and critical differential diagnoses in daily clinical practice were addressed. Emphasis was also placed on integrating ICOP with DC/TMD diagnostic criteria to optimize clinical decision-making and improve diagnostic accuracy in patients with orofacial pain. The session concluded with question-and-answer sessions, group interaction, and discussion of clinical cases to reinforce the concepts reviewed and promote their practical application.
