This past Saturday, May 31st, we experienced a memorable day at the historic Hotel Museo Santo Domingo in Antigua Guatemala, where the International Symposium on Dental Sleep Medicine took place under the theme “Caring for Sleep.” In a setting of unmatched historical and cultural richness, dentists and healthcare professionals came together to address sleep-related breathing disorders in both adults and children through a comprehensive and collaborative approach.

The response was outstanding. The event brought together a wide audience from across Central America and beyond, reinforcing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating sleep apnea, snoring, bruxism, and other sleep disorders that impact overall and oral health.

We were honored to be joined by an exceptional panel of speakers, who each brought critical expertise and insight to the program:

  • Dr. Leopoldo Correa, BDS, MS (USA/México) – Founder of Orofacial Sleep Consortium – Global; internationally recognized leader in Dental Sleep Medicine education.
  • Dr. Alma Luna Mata, BDS, MS (Mexico) – Orthodontist and expert in pediatric sleep-disordered breathing and early orthodontic intervention.
  • Dr. Fernando Ceballos, MD (Guatemala) – Neurologist and President of the Guatemalan Sleep Medicine Association; known for his work in sleep and neurological disorders.
  • Dr. Stanley Liu, MD, DDS (USA) – Oral and maxillofacial surgeon and faculty at Nova Southeastern University; specialist in surgical interventions for sleep apnea.

Throughout the day, participants engaged with high-level clinical content, including topics such as imaging-based diagnostics, clinical tools, orthodontic interventions, innovative surgical approaches, and shared care models involving dentists, neurologists, ENT specialists, and maxillofacial surgeons.

In addition, the symposium served as the official launch of the Mastery Program in Dental Sleep Medicine in Guatemala—an initiative aimed at elevating professional training in the region to the next level.

📚 Participants received 8 hours of continuing education with academic accreditation, enhancing their clinical practice with up-to-date, evidence-based tools.

This event was not only a success for its academic quality, but also for the spirit of community, collaboration, and commitment to advancing sleep health in Latin America.

📩 Stay tuned for upcoming dates in other countries across the region.
