Stanley Liu / DDS, MD

My passion in sleep medicine began as an undergraduate at Stanford University, and later, as a medical student when I met Dr. Nelson Powell, a pioneer of sleep surgery. I then completed dental and medical schools, internship in General Surgery, and residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at UCSF. During training, I also completed a year as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) scholar at the NIH. Under Dr. Robert Riley’s tutelage, I completed the Sleep Surgery Fellowship at Stanford University with the Department of Otolaryngology.

My academic career began as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Stanford. I underwent additional training as a Faculty Fellow of Stanford BioDesign. I directed the Sleep Surgery Fellowship, which produced sleep surgery leaders around the U.S. For clinical care and research, I focused on updating the Riley-Powell sleep surgery approach with the advent of sleep endoscopy, maxillary expansion, and hypoglossal nerve stimulation. I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed work and invited book chapters. Currently, as Chair of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Nova Southeastern University, I aim to fully integrate sleep airway care with expertise from medicine, dentistry, and MedTech.
